Cargo Baskets DNV2.7-1 Standard - An Overview

Many people looking for versatile, durable containers often turn to offshore cargo baskets for several reasons—durability, strength, and diverse applications to name a few. This article presents a brief overview of how BSL Offshore cargo baskets are made, and how they can be used in offshore and other settings.

Production Process
The DNV 2.7-1 and EN 12079 are the gold standard in certification for safety, construction, design, manufacturing, and inspection for all offshore containers. This is no different for cargo baskets. In order to meet the exacting standards to obtain certification, all regulations must be met.
The process starts with drawing specifications and plans that must be approved prior to production. Once approved, all welders, quality inspectors and managers, and materials must also be approved by the DNV (as they will be the ones distributing the certification of the cargo baskets). The entire process is overseen by the DNV. Once the cargo baskets are built, and inspection is performed, requiring full documentation, lifting tests, and weatherproof tests. If the testing, documentation, and all other requirements have been satisfactorily met, then certification is approved.
Once these certifications are bestowed on the containers, the cargo baskets are ready for use globally, at all offshore sites and any port.

Uses for Cargo Baskets
Cargo baskets are most useful for storing products that are unusual heights, or off-dimension. They are open topped and allow for storage and transport of various materials. The most commonly stored and transported items in cargo baskets include pipes, risers, large tools, and off-size machinery. Some store liquid and earthen commodities in cargo baskets, and secure them with an approved tarpaulin. When choosing cargo baskets, there are several points to consider:

  • The moisture tolerance of the cargo to be contained.
  • The durability of the cargo in strong sunlight, salty air, and inclement weather.
  • The size of the cargo to be contained.
  • The type of cargo to be contained.
  • The amount of usage the cargo will experience (in other words, how hard it will be to remove and replace the commodities being used—top loading versus side loading, etc.).
  • How often the cargo will be moved from site to site.

Pondering these points can help when choosing the appropriate cargo baskets for offshore and other uses. Many companies offer standard sizes when it comes to cargo baskets. Not so with BSL. BSL allows for complete customization of cargo baskets to fit the unique needs of the end-user.
There are several things that can be customized on cargo baskets—including size/dimensions, lashing points, lips and seals, drainage points, and lift slots. It is important to note, however, that all customization and drawings must be approved by the DNV, and must meet their requirements prior to production (as described above).
