Design Specifics of Half Height Containers

Half height containers are useful for storage and transport of pipes, tools, and other off-dimension commodities. When looking at half height containers for any offshore application, or any other application, for that matter, it is important to know what's available, how they store and transport cargo, and of what materials they are made.

Measurements and Weights
BSL Offshore has two standard half height containers available:

  • the 10' x 8' x 4' container: exterior dimensions 2991mm x 2438mm x 1220mm; interior dimensions 2764mm x 2214mm x 935mm. Tare weight: 1,750 kg. Gross weight: 5,000 kg. Payload: 3,250 kg.
  • the 20' x 8' x 4' container: exterior dimensions 6058mm x 2438mm x 1220mm; interior dimensions 5758mm x 2012mm x 880mm. Tare weight: 3,320 kg. Gross weight: 13,320 kg. Payload: 10,000 kg.

Unloading and Loading
There are two ways that half height containers can be loaded and unloaded for storage. The first is top loaded, usually accomplished by crane or forklift, depending on size of the cargo to be held or transported. The second is side loading, which is typically by forklift, through the removable or swinging side door.
When half height containers are loaded onto ocean vessels or onto trucks for transport from one site to another, they must be lifted appropriately. This means that secured tarpaulins must cover the tops (to avoid spillage and debris flying out), and all cargo contained therein must be secured by lashings and cargo nets. Then, the containers are lifted fully horizontally. Half height containers should never tip or tilt, as this poses a danger to the workers, and, depending on what the cargo is, can pose a threat to the environment itself. This is why BSL Offshore half height containers are secured with lifting points and proper, ISO 1161 corner fittings for series one freight containers.

Materials Used
It's important to note that only metals are used in the construction of offshore half height containers. The acceptable metal materials used are:

  • carbon steel
  • carbon-manganese steel (micro-alloyed)
  • carbon-manganese steel (low-alloyed)
  • carbon-manganese steel
  • aluminum (wrought alloyed)

These metals must meet a required thickness in order to be considered for use in the creation of half height containers. To use other materials, such as plywood, timber, or plastics could not only compromise the durability of the container, but shorten its life span, endanger workers, and the environment. Offshore half height containers are built with the harsh environment of the ocean in mind, and only the strongest metals will stand up to the corrosive effects of the salty air, ocean mist, and active storms.
